Christmas Tree Growers help keep county green - Nov. 2007
One of the hottest issues in Bucks County and throughout the country is the need to protect farmland and reduce urban sprawl. The Bucks County Christmas Tree growers urge you to support local agriculture by purchasing a fresh tree from one of the many Christmas Tree growers in the area. "Many people don't realize that nurseries and tree growers are part of the agricultural community," said Bob Colavita, operator of Colavita's Tree Farm and president of the Association.
Tree farms not only contribute to the scenic beauty of Bucks County, but also benefit the overall environment in many ways.
Each acre of trees provides the daily oxygen requirements of 18 people. Trees help retain the all important moisture in the soil to aid in groundwater recharge. Trees in the field provide a natural habitat for a variety of wildlife. Christmas Trees are a renewable crop; for every tree harvested, two to three seedlings are planted in its place insuring a continuous crop. And, after the holidays, trees can be recycled in most communities. Ask your municipality about their tree recycling program. Recycled trees can be turned into valuable mulch or used to stabilize streambanks and coastal areas.
Choosing and cutting your tree at a local farm will be a memorable experience for the whole family. You and your holiday guests will enjoy your fragrant, long-lasting Christmas Tree throughout the season. And you will be helping to protect the environment and preserve the scenic agricultural heritage of beautiful Bucks County.
